Southeast Wisconsin's growing artist community

The Racine Arts & Business Center is home to Southeast Wisconsin's growing artist community. 16th Street Studios celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2020 and has grown to include over 70 artists.

Industry

A HISTORY OF INNOVATION

The Cream City brick building was built in 1865 and Racine Wagon & Carriage Company took it over in the 1870’s. They continued to add on until 1905. After the advent of the automobile and the decline of the wagon industry, they opened manufacturing space to other entrepreneurs, changed the name to Racine Industrial Plant, and became the first business incubator in the country.

Many of Racine's businesses got their start within the Racine Industrial Plant, including: Modine Manufacturing Company, Webster Electric, Dumore, Midland Container Co., D.W. Davies, Scan-o-Matic, Marini Tool & Die, Racine Boiler, Tank/Metalworld.

Today the innovation continues with a wide range of manufacturers and other entrepreneurs.
